Italian artist, poet, playwright and librettist.

Cammarano came from a family of artists, and his uncle Filippo wrote opera librettos. Salvatore directed at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples and worked with the most important Italian musicians of his time. In 1834 he left the prose theatre and dedicated his activities to opera librettos. He wrote 8 for Donizetti, among which Lucia di Lammermoor, 4 for Verdi: Alzira, La battaglia di Legnano, Luisa Miller and Il trovatore, 6 for Paicini, among which Saffo, 5 for Mercadante and another 30, all of the romantic genre, for minor composers.

He died suddenly while he was finishing the libretto for Il trovatore; it was completed by L.E. Bardare.
