Antonio Ghislanzoni
(Lecco, 1824 - Caprino Bergamasco, 1893)
Italian music critic and librettist.
He studied medicine in Pavia, but, an enthusiastic singer, he started out his carrier in music as a baritone. He sang for several years in various Italian and foreign theatres, and later became a journalist and writer. He was the director of the Rivista minima from 1865 to 1878 with collaborators such as Barrili, Boito and De Amicis, among others. He was the editor of the Gazzetta musicale di Milano from 1866 to 1872. Author of short stories, poetry and novels, he also wrote some 85 librettos, including Ednea for Catalani (1866), Aida (1870), the new version of La forza del destino (1869) and the translation for the Italian version of Don Carlos for Verdi. An occasional follower of the Scapigliatura, he also published several musical essays among which Artistic reminiscences and Artists of the theatre (1856).
