Casa Verdi A retirement home for musicians
On 6 December 1899 in a house in via Manzoni 29 in Milan, Giuseppe Verdi set up the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti - Fondazione Giuseppe Verdi which would “accommodate and maintain musicians of both sexes who are Italian citizens and find themselves in a state of poverty”.
It was unique project for its time and it was considered to be the final great masterpiece of the maestro from Busseto who dedicated the last two years of his life to the home before his death in 1901 at the age of 88.
“Of my works, the one I like the most is the retirement home that I’ve had built in Milan for old singers who have not been favoured by fortune, or who did not possess the virtue of saving when they were younger. The poor, dear companions of my life!  Believe me my friend, that home is truly my most beautiful work” wrote Giuseppe Verdi in a letter to his friend Giulio Monterverde.
Following his specific request the retirement home was inaugurated after his death since he did not wish to be thanked by those who would have benefited from his generosity. The first nine guests entered the home on 10th October 1902, the Maestro’s the date of birth. According to the statute of the home it is open to “less fortunate musicians, to those who have dedicated their professional life to the musical arts” and so far 1000 people have lodged there including singers, conductors, chorus members, orchestral players, teachers and dancers.
In 1998 the foundation extended the aims of the statute with the aim of mixing musicians of different generations. In addition to the priority objective of providing accommodation for older musicians, a helping hand was also extended to needy music students who are enrolled at recognized music schools in Milan.
In his will Verdi set-aside capital and the author’s rights from his works to maintain the structure.  However the retirement home is able to carry out its work  above all due to the generosity of a number of benefactors and a considerable portfolio of property and investments.
On 22 June 2007 the foundation set up Fondazione Casa dei Musicisti (the Musicians Home Foundation) a non-profit making body with the exclusive aim of providing accommodation for musicians according to the statutory norms and the rules of the Giuseppe Verdi Foundation.
