Born in Reggio Emilia March 15th, 1947, he obtained his degree in letters from the University of Bologna.
Since March 1st, 1998, he is city manager of the Sopraintendenza Archeologica of Pompeii.
He is secretary-treasurer for the National Committee for the Verdi Celebrations.
He has been professor of Italian and Latin at the "Ludovico Ariosto" state high school in Reggio Emilia and a researcher at the Centro di Iniziative Didattiche dell'Antico in the department of ancient history at the University of Bologna.
He was councillor for schools and cultural activities for the provincial administration of Reggio Emilia (1970-75) and councillor for culture for the city administration of Reggio Emilia (1975-80). During that time he was also president of the "Romolo Valli" municipal theatre.
He has been president of the Emilia-Romagna regional Institute for Artistic, Cultural and Natural Works (1982-92) and director of the Emilia-Romagna agency for cultural initiatives A.I.C.E.R., S.p.A (1991-98).
A member of the State-Region joint committee for cultural and the environment from 1983 to 1993, he was vice-president of the national council for culture and the environment from 1988 to 1993, and from 1992 to 1997 he was member of the national commission for promotion of Italian culture abroad, under the Ministry for External Affairs.
He was a founding member of the Association for cultural economy, of which he was vice-president until 1997.
